In this article, I present a firsthand account as an anaesthetist with substance use disorder who has been through rehabilitation and returned to clinical anaesthesia, followed by overview of in anaesthesia. Substance is prevalent within the anaesthesia community can result tragic consequences, including death many cases. The incidence around one two per 1000 years appears be rising, perhaps mirroring population-wide increase opioid epidemic. Recognising colleague intervening try help them protect patients immensely challenging. Carrying out successful intervention requires careful planning coordination order affected individual, their colleagues patients. Returning following diagnosis also contentious, high abstinence rate (relative wider population) having balanced against risk relapse. Any return practice must well planned supported, include appropriate toxicology screening. With such measures, possible certain For individual regaining, then maintaining, professional identity powerful motivator remain abstinent. Drug diversion unlikely ever fully preventable, but strategies biometric dispensing, analysis unused drugs, random ongoing education may keep it minimum.
